OMDE 606, Costs & Economics of Distance Education and
E-learning
E-learning
This is an analysis of resource costs for a start-up course in distance teaching, compared to traditional modes of teaching and learning, the cost efficiency of online or distance learning was more economical, although it was clear that maintaining start up costs was a challenge unless Moore & Kearsley's (2005) systems approach was utilized. Distance teaching has low running costs, even for student support services when economies of scale or more students are matriculating. In spite of costs, student supports are an investment that has warranted much research, even today. Technology has influenced the cost structures of distance education and ensures appropriate interventions are made for the online student. This was a challenging but interesting class, the group assignment was rewarding and educational, showing the importance and benefits of student interaction in online learning.
