OMDE 601 Reflective Journal began my journey in the Distance Education Teaching and Training program, an experience that continues to develop as the blooming flower, continues to grow with practice. The reflection of this journey involved creating a learning journal, a practice that students are encouraged to take on, especially new students in the online learning environment.
Distance and online learning vs. higher education
My interest in higher education is preparing students for the new trend in education--distance and online learning. DE changes the perception of learning, especially the modes of delivery that accommodate students; where they are. Not only is distance teaching and learning focused on student needs and interests, it also focus on the principle of lifelong learning. Campuses today are evolving from traditional face-to-face teaching structures to combine online, digital, computer-assisted teaching and learning environments. (Peters, 2005). As I continue to grow academically, my focus is providing ample student support to ensure persistence. I have applied concepts from the program to prepare students in the blended freshman seminar classes. Students acquire an understanding of the basics of distance or computed-mediated, and online learning. The goal has been to hopefully expose students to the world of educational transformation in teaching, and learning, not what it was in the 60s and 70s--correspondence, mail, and print-based--but a more interactive, student motivated learning environment. Students are now being accommodated, financially, and culturally without restrictions of space and time. Learning is more flexible and self-directed, as organizations and universities integrate net-based learning processes in instructional modules, educating a more global, and diverse student base. The importance of education, is now, open learning through space and the integration of media.
